Katumba Secondary School

Katumba Secondary is a typical secondary school in the Tanzanian system. The school instructs roughly 959 students, half boys, and half girls in the standard Form 1 through 6 curriculums. Many of the students are from the local area, but more than half must travel long distances to attend school and therefore board at the school.

The Rukwa Foundation has been involved with Katumba Secondary since 2018. Initial interventions focused on improving the cooking stoves in the boarding area of the school. On a subsequent visit, the school was provided with several hundred solar lights to allow boarders to work on homework after sunset. After consulting with the school’s matron, that 2019 support was expanded to include bunkbeds for the boarding students who had been sleeping on cold, wet stone floors.

Bringing light

Imagine traveling miles from your home to study for a life-altering exam at a respected secondary school. Then imagine trying to get all your homework done before sunset, because there is no electricity in your dorm. Watch what happens when a small solar light changes all of that.
